Mediation is a voluntary and confidential process where a neutral third party, the mediator, helps parties in conflict communicate, identify issues, and explore options to reach a mutually acceptable agreement.
The length of mediation varies depending on the complexity of the issues and the willingness of the parties to cooperate. Some mediations can be resolved in a single session, while others may require multiple sessions over several weeks.
Mediation itself does not create a legally binding agreement. However, if parties reach an agreement during mediation, it can be formalized into a legally binding contract, often referred to as a mediation agreement or settlement agreement.
Mediation can be used to resolve a wide range of conflicts, including disputes between family members, neighbors, business partners, landlords and tenants, employers and employees, and in various other interpersonal or organizational settings.
The cost of mediation varies depending on the mediator's fees, the number of sessions required, and other factors. Many mediators offer sliding scale fees or payment plans to make mediation more affordable.
